Worked example

A 14 x 16 ft living room with two doors and a 5 ft cased opening to the hall: the perimeter is 2 x (14 + 16) = 60 ft. Subtract 6 ft for the doors and 5 ft for the opening to get 49 ft. Add 10% waste for 53.9 ft. In 12 ft lengths that is 53.9 / 12 = 4.5, so buy 5 pieces (60 ft). At $1.50 per foot the baseboard costs $90.

Nails: 49 x 12 / 16 = 37 studs, times 2 nails = 74 finish nails, so one small box.

How to calculate baseboard

Measure each wall along the floor and add them up for the perimeter, or for a simple rectangle double the length plus width. Subtract every door, about 3 feet each including the casing, and any cased opening, closet without a door, fireplace or built-in that the baseboard stops at. What is left is the length you will actually install.

Add 10 percent for waste, then divide by the stock length you plan to buy and round up. Better still, list the wall lengths and match pieces to walls: an 11 foot wall wastes 5 feet of a 16 foot piece but only 1 foot of a 12 foot piece. Walls longer than the stock length need a scarf joint over a stud.

Materials, corners and installation

Primed MDF is the cheapest and most stable option and paints well, but it swells if it gets wet, so use finger-jointed pine or poplar in bathrooms and laundry rooms. Stain-grade oak or maple is sold in shorter random lengths, so plan on 15 percent waste. Match the profile height to the room: 3 1/4 inch for 8 foot ceilings, 5 1/4 inch or taller for 9 feet and up.

Cope inside corners by cutting one piece square into the corner and shaping the mating piece to its profile; a mitered inside corner opens as the wood dries. Miter outside corners at 45 degrees and glue the joint. Nail with two 2 inch finish nails at every stud, fill the holes, caulk the top edge and paint.

The perimeter is 48 feet. With one door that is 45 feet of baseboard, or about 50 feet with 10% waste, which is 7 pieces of 8 feet or 4 pieces of 16 feet.

How do I calculate linear feet of baseboard?

Add the length of every wall in feet, subtract 3 feet for each door and the width of any other openings. Linear feet is just length, so the baseboard height does not matter.

What length does baseboard come in?

Stock lengths are 8, 12 and 16 feet. Some suppliers sell stain-grade hardwood in random lengths from 6 to 16 feet.

How many nails do I need for baseboard?

Two finish nails at every stud, 16 inches on center, which works out to about 1.5 nails per foot. A 50 foot room needs about 75 nails, so a single 1 lb box is plenty.
