Framing counts come from spacing: studs at 16 inches on center, joists at 16 inches, fence posts at 8 feet, balusters no more than 4 inches apart. Each calculator here turns a length into a count of pieces, adds the extras that layout rules miss (corners, king and jack studs, end posts), and converts to the lumber sizes the yard sells.

Where structure matters, the tools follow the International Residential Code: joist span tables, riser and tread limits, guard spacing, post depth. Results are for planning and shopping; local code, span tables for your species and grade, and an inspector decide the final design.

How many studs do I need per foot of wall?

About 0.75 studs per foot at 16 in on center, plus 3 per corner and 4 per opening. A 20 ft wall with two corners and one door uses about 29 studs with waste.

What is the maximum riser height and minimum tread for stairs?

Under the IRC, risers may be no taller than 7.75 in and treads no shallower than 10 in, with no more than 3/8 in variation between steps.

How deep should fence and deck posts go?

At least one third of the post height and below the frost line. A 6 ft fence uses 8 ft posts set 2 ft deep with about two 50 lb bags of concrete each.
