A 3 in branch running 18 ft from a bathroom group to the stack at 1/4 in per foot: 18 x 0.25 = 4.5 inches of fall. That is a 2.08 percent slope, or 1 in 48. If the pipe starts 10 inches below the subfloor, it arrives 14.5 inches below it, which has to clear the floor joists and the ceiling below.
The same 18 ft at the 1/8 in per foot minimum allowed on 3 in pipe drops only 2.25 inches, so the far end sits 12.25 inches down. That is the trade: the flatter run is legal on 3 in and saves 2.25 inches of headroom, but it leaves no margin if the pipe sags between hangers.

How much fall a drain line needs
The rule is a quarter inch of fall for every foot of run on pipe up to 2-1/2 inches, and an eighth of an inch per foot on 3 through 6 inch pipe. IPC Table 704.1 sets both. A quarter inch per foot is a 2.08 percent slope; an eighth is 1.04 percent. Multiply the run by the slope and you have the fall.
Slope has a practical ceiling as well as a floor. Water moves faster than the solids it carries, and on a long horizontal run much steeper than a quarter inch per foot the liquid drains away and leaves the solids behind. A vertical drop is fine, since everything falls together. It is the long, steep horizontal that strands paper.
Working the fall into the building
Fall is a depth problem before it is a slope problem. Set the invert at the connection first, work back up the run, and see where the pipe lands at the fixture. A 60 ft lateral at a quarter inch per foot needs 15 inches of drop, and that has to fit between the house connection and the depth of the sewer main or the septic inlet. Where it does not fit, 4 inch pipe at an eighth per foot halves it.
Inside the house the same arithmetic fights the floor framing. A drain crossing joists has to run below them or through holes drilled in the middle third, and it has to keep falling the whole way. Support the pipe every 4 feet on plastic so it does not sag between hangers, and put a cleanout at the base of the stack and at every direction change over 45 degrees.
What this calculator leaves out
The drain size itself, which comes from fixture units in IPC Table 710.1(2), and the venting, which is a separate design. It does not check headroom under the joists, the depth of the sewer main or septic inlet, the trench bedding, or the local amendments that make some jurisdictions require a quarter inch per foot on 3 inch pipe. It also leaves out the permit, the water or air test on the rough-in, and any backwater valve required where the fixtures sit below the next upstream manhole cover.

Mistakes that cost money
- Sloping a 4 in lateral at 1/4 in per foot for 80 ft buries the far end 20 in deeper and can put it under the sewer main.
- Pipe supported every 8 ft instead of every 4 ft sags between hangers, and each sag becomes a flat spot that collects paper.
- Cutting the slope into the joists instead of dropping the pipe below them: notching a joist bottom is not allowed anywhere in the span.
- Measuring the run along the sloped pipe rather than flat on the ground gives a short fall and a slope under the minimum.
- No cleanout at the 90 into the stack means a snake has to come in through a toilet flange later.
- A yard or area drain run at 1/8 in per foot silts up; storm lines want a full 1 percent and a settled, compacted trench bottom.
