A two-story colonial with 240 ft of eave, 6 in seamless aluminum, 8 downspouts averaging 24 ft, micro-mesh guards and the old gutters hauled off. The two-story factor is 1.20. Gutter: 240 x $11 to $20 x 1.20 = $3,168 to $5,760. Downspouts: 192 ft x $9.90 to $18.00 x 1.20 = $2,281 to $4,147.
Guards: 240 x $7 to $18 x 1.20 = $2,016 to $5,184. Removal: 240 x $1.00 to $2.50 x 1.20 = $288 to $720. The total lands near $7,750 to $15,810, which is $32.30 to $65.88 per linear foot. The guards are close to half the job, which is why they belong on their own line of the quote.

What a per foot gutter quote actually covers
A seamless gutter quote is a system price. The number the installer gives you per linear foot normally carries the gutter, the hidden hangers, the outlets, the miters, the end caps, the sealant and the labor, and on most bids the downspouts are folded in as well. A big box price per 10 ft section carries the gutter alone. That is why $9 per foot installed and $6 per section look comparable and are not: by the time you add hangers, connectors, elbows, straps and a weekend on a ladder, the sectional job lands close to the installed price and leaks at every joint.
Because seamless gutter is roll-formed on site from a coil, the length of a single run does not change the price per foot. A 44 ft run and a 12 ft run cost the same per foot of material and hanging; only the miters, outlets and end caps add labor, and those follow the number of corners, not the footage. Ask for the quote broken into gutter, downspouts, guards and removal. Those four lines are what actually vary between bidders.
Where the money goes: material, height and guards
Material sets the floor. Vinyl sectional typically runs $4 to $8 per foot and is a five to ten year product that goes brittle in UV and cracks in a freeze. Seamless aluminum in 5 in K-style is $8 to $15 and is what the overwhelming majority of US houses get. Six inch aluminum is $11 to $20 and belongs on steep roofs, long runs and the Gulf Coast. Steel is $12 to $22 and holds up to ladders better than aluminum but rusts at cut edges. Copper is $30 to $60 and wants copper hangers, copper screws and a soldered miter.
Height is pure labor, and it is the line homeowners never see coming: a second story typically adds about 20 percent and a third story or a walkout hillside about 45 percent, because ladders become staging and everything needs two people. Guards are the other surprise. Micro-mesh screwed to the gutter lip typically runs $7 to $18 per foot installed, and a branded whole-house system $20 to $40. On a 240 ft house, guards can cost as much as the gutters. Guards also add weight, so hangers tighten from 24 in to 16 in, and they still need a rinse once a year.
What this calculator leaves out
Fascia repair behind the old gutter, typically $8 to $15 per foot, and a gutter apron where the drip edge is missing. Splash blocks, downspout extensions, buried 4 in drain line to daylight or a drywell, and any storm connection the town requires. Heat cable in ice dam country, typically $12 to $25 per foot installed. Custom colors, soldered copper miters, rain chains, leaf catchers at the outlets, and a fresh coat on the fascia while the gutter is off. Permits are rare for gutters but stormwater connections often need one.
Mistakes that cost money
- Comparing a per foot seamless quote to a big box sectional price: the seamless number already includes downspouts, hangers, miters and labor.
- Adding a branded guard price on top of a gutter quote: those systems are sold with new gutter, so the two numbers are not additive.
- New gutters on rotted fascia: the board comes first, typically $8 to $15 per foot, and it is rarely in the gutter quote.
- Galvanized steel gutter within a few miles of salt water rusts at every cut end and seam inside a decade; aluminum does not.
- Copper hung with aluminum or steel hangers and screws: the dissimilar pair corrodes and the run drops off the fascia.
- Treating removal as free: hauling off old gutter typically adds $1.00 to $2.50 per foot and lands at the end of the bid.
