Quick answer: To estimate soffit and fascia, add the eave and rake lengths, multiply by the soffit width for the soffit area, and use the same total length for fascia, F-channel and J-channel. A house with 120 ft of eave, 60 ft of rake and 16 in soffits has 240 sq ft of soffit, or 264 sq ft with 10% waste, which is 22 vinyl panels, 198 ft of 1x6 fascia and 180 ft each of F-channel and J-channel.

Soffit and Fascia formula

Run = Eave length + Rake length
Soffit area = Run x Soffit width (in) / 12 x (1 + waste %)

Worked example

A ranch with 90 ft of eave, 40 ft of rake and 24 in soffits: run = 130 ft, area = 130 x 24 / 12 = 260 sq ft. With 10% waste that is 286 sq ft. Aluminum panels cover 16 sq ft each, so 286 / 16 = 17.9, or 18 panels.

Fascia: 130 x 1.1 = 143 ft, which is 143 / 12 = 11.9, so 12 pieces of 12 ft aluminum fascia cover. F-channel along the wall and J-channel at the fascia are 130 ft each, or 11 pieces of 12 ft apiece.

Measuring eaves and rakes

Walk the house and measure every horizontal roof edge for the eave total, then measure the sloped gable edges for the rake total. Rake length is the sloped distance, not the horizontal width of the house; a 30 ft wide gable at 6/12 pitch has two rakes of about 16.8 ft each. A hip roof has no rakes, only eaves all the way around.

Measure the soffit width from the wall to the outside face of the fascia. Vinyl and aluminum panels run perpendicular to the wall and are cut to that width, so panel count is driven by area, not length. Plywood soffit is ripped into strips of the soffit width from 4 x 8 sheets.

Fascia, channels and ventilation

Wood fascia is usually 1x6 for 2x6 rafter tails and 1x8 for deeper tails, primed on all sides before installation. Aluminum fascia cover wraps existing wood so it never needs paint and comes in 12 ft lengths; count pieces after adding waste for corners and splices. On the wall side, F-channel receives the soffit panels; on the outer edge, J-channel or the lip of the fascia cover holds them.

Use vented soffit panels along the eaves for attic intake air. Vented vinyl and aluminum panels typically provide 5 to 10 sq in of net free area per linear foot, printed on the carton, so a long run of fully vented soffit adds up quickly.
