Worked example

A 15 x 14 ft dining room in 5 in wide plank with 15% waste: 15 x 14 = 210 sq ft. Add 15% for 241.5 sq ft. With boxes that cover 22 sq ft, 241.5 / 22 = 10.98, so buy 11 boxes.

Linear feet: 241.5 x 12 / 5 = 579.6 ft of boards. Cleats at one every 8 in: 579.6 x 12 / 8 = 869.4, so about 870 cleats, or one box of 1,000. Underlayment paper: 210 / 400 = 0.53, so one roll.

How to calculate hardwood flooring

Multiply the room length and width for square feet, add closets and adjoining halls, then add waste. Standard 2 1/4 or 3 1/4 inch strip in a straight run needs about 10 percent; wide plank, diagonal or herringbone layouts and character grades with more defects need 15 percent. Divide by the coverage on the bundle and round up.

Boxes of 3/4 inch solid hardwood usually cover 18 to 24 square feet, but the exact number varies by width and manufacturer, so read the label. Buy every box at the same time so the color and milling match, and keep one box for future repairs.

Fasteners, underlayment and acclimation

Nail-down solid flooring is fastened through the tongue with 2 inch cleats or staples from a flooring nailer, one every 6 to 8 inches and within 2 inches of each board end. A box of 1,000 covers roughly 700 linear feet of boards. Over the subfloor, lay 15 lb asphalt felt or rosin paper with 4 inch overlaps to reduce squeaks and slow moisture movement.

Let the wood acclimate in the room until its moisture content is within 2 to 4 percent of the subfloor, which typically takes several days to two weeks. Leave a 3/4 inch gap at every wall and run boards perpendicular to the joists.

How much hardwood flooring do I need for 200 square feet?

Add 10% waste for 220 square feet, which is 11 boxes at 20 square feet per box. Use 15% waste, or 230 square feet, for wide plank or a diagonal layout.

How many linear feet of hardwood are in a square foot?

Divide 12 by the board width in inches. A 2 1/4 in strip needs 5.33 linear feet per square foot, a 3 1/4 in board needs 3.69 feet, and a 5 in plank needs 2.4 feet.

How many cleats do I need for hardwood flooring?

About 1.5 cleats per linear foot of board at 8 inch spacing. A 200 square foot room in 3 1/4 in boards has about 740 linear feet of board before waste, or about 810 with 10% waste, and needs roughly 1,200 cleats, so buy two boxes of 1,000.

Do I need felt paper under hardwood floors?

It is recommended for nail-down installations over a wood subfloor. 15 lb asphalt felt or rosin paper reduces squeaks and dust; a roll of felt covers about 400 square feet.
