The buried course is 6 / 8 = 0.75 ft, so the wall is built 6.75 ft tall. Face area is 360 sq ft, so the wall itself is $10,800 to $21,600. The base takes 4.15 tons of stone, $187 to $353. Drainage is 21 tons of clean stone, 60 ft of pipe and 405 sq ft of fabric, $1,448 to $2,871. Excavation over 405 sq ft of built face is $1,620 to $3,240, and the engineered design plus permit adds $950 to $3,200 because the face is over 4 ft. The total is about $15,000 to $31,300, which is $41.68 to $86.84 per square foot of face, or $250 to $521 per linear foot.

The 4 foot line and what crossing it costs
Four feet of exposed face is where a landscape project turns into a permitted structure. IRC R404.4 calls for a design by accepted engineering practice once a wall holds more than 48 inches of unbalanced fill. R105.2 measures the exemption from the bottom of the footing, not from grade. A wall showing 3 feet 6 inches with a buried course underneath is already over the line. Budget $800 to $2,500 for a stamped design in 2026, plus $150 to $700 for the permit. Expect the design to add geogrid layers and a deeper base you had not priced.
The surcharge rule catches more people than the height rule. Under IBC 1807.2.3, anything bearing on the soil behind the wall adds to the lateral load. That means a driveway, a parking pad, a pool, a shed, or a slope rising away from the top. With a surcharge present, R404.4 pulls the threshold down to 24 inches. Two terraced walls closer together than twice the height of the lower one are reviewed as a single wall. Stepping a 6 foot wall into two 3 foot walls three feet apart avoids nothing.
Drainage is the line item that decides whether the wall lasts
Retaining walls almost never fail because the units were too weak. They fail because water builds up behind them. Saturated soil roughly doubles the lateral pressure on the wall, and in freezing climates the ice lens behind a clay backfill finishes the job. The package that prevents it is cheap against the wall itself. Put a 12 inch zone of clean 3/4 inch stone behind the full built height. At the base run a 4 inch perforated pipe that daylights past the end of the wall or into a drywell. Non-woven filter fabric goes between the stone and the native soil so fines do not plug it. On a 30 by 4.5 foot wall that is about 7 tons of stone at $45 to $85 per ton placed by hand. The whole package lands near $530 to $1,060.
Two details get cut and both matter. The pipe has to have an outlet you can see, not a stub buried in the stone. The fabric has to separate the stone from the soil on the back and top of the drainage zone. A clean stone chimney filled with silt drains no better than clay. Compact the native backfill in 6 to 8 inch lifts, but keep the plate compactor at least 3 feet off the wall and hand tamp inside that.
What this calculator leaves out
Demolition of an existing wall, tree and stump removal in the bank, and replacing the sod or plantings the excavator tracks over. Steps, corners and radius units, handrail or fence at the top where a drop-off needs guarding, lighting sleeves, and any irrigation or utility line that has to be relocated. It does not price a soils report where the engineer asks for one, dewatering on a wet site, or delivery and crane charges on pallets. A tieback or soldier pile wall is a different structure, priced by the engineer. Sales tax and disposal fees vary by county and sit outside it as well.

Mistakes that cost money
- Pricing the wall by the block and forgetting what goes behind it; base and drainage are 10 to 20 percent of a segmental wall bid.
- Treated timber quoted as the cheap option: 6 x 6 ties last 15 to 25 years, so the rebuild lands inside the same mortgage.
- Geogrid cut from the bid to hit a number. The layers cannot be added later without taking the wall apart.
- Terraced walls closer together than twice the lower wall height count as one tall wall, and both need the engineered design.
- No allowance for tight access: wheelbarrowing block and stone through a gate roughly doubles the labor line.
- A drain pipe that dead-ends in the stone instead of daylighting past the wall end leaves the wall carrying full water pressure.
