A powder room with a 40 ft perimeter, one 3 ft doorway, 42 in board and batten and an 18 in target, laid out from a 16 ft wall. That wall is 192 in, less the 2-1/2 in batten, so 189.5 in. 189.5 / 18 = 10.53, rounded to 11 bays. 189.5 / 11 = 17.23 in on center, leaving 14.73 in of drywall in every bay and a matching batten in each corner.
Net run is 40 - 3 = 37 ft, or 444 in. 444 / 17.23 = 25.8, rounded up to 26, plus one is 27 battens. A 42 in batten yields two pieces from an 8 ft 1x3, so 14 boards before waste and 16 with 10 percent. Cap and base at three runs each need 37 x 3 x 1.1 = 122 ft apiece.

Divide the wall, do not step off a spacing
The difference between wainscot that looks built and wainscot that looks applied is the corners. Take the wall length in inches, subtract one batten width, divide by the spacing you want and round to a whole number of bays. Divide the same length by that whole number and you have the real on center spacing. Every bay comes out identical and the two end battens match, which is the point.
Do each wall separately and accept that the spacing shifts a little from wall to wall. A 14 ft wall at 16.55 in and a 12 ft wall at 15.72 in read as the same pattern from across the room; a 4 in offcut in one corner does not. Mark the centers with a laser or a story stick before anything is cut, and shift the layout so no batten lands within 2 in of a door casing.
Height, parts and materials
One third of the wall height is the proportion that reads correctly: 32 in under an 8 ft ceiling, 36 to 42 in under 9 and 10 ft. Going to 48 in works when the room is tall or when the wainscot is doing a job, such as protecting a mudroom or a stair wall. On a stair the cap follows the nosing line and every batten is cut on the rake, which is where the 15 percent waste goes.
Primed MDF is the default for paint grade because it is dead flat and sprays with no grain raise, but it swells if water reaches a cut edge, so seal the bottoms and keep it out of splash zones. Finger joint poplar costs more and copes better. Glue with a solvent free construction adhesive and brad it with 18 gauge; the adhesive does the holding once it cures. Prime cut ends before they go on the wall, caulk the top and bottom of every batten, and coat the field before the cap goes up.
What this calculator leaves out
Paintable caulk at roughly one 10 oz tube per 30 ft of batten edge, wood filler, primer and two finish coats. Outlet and switch box extenders where the field material builds the wall out, plus longer device screws. Removing and reinstalling the old baseboard, patching the drywall it leaves behind, and scribing the first piece to a floor that is out of level. Mitered returns where the wainscot dies into a door casing, plinth blocks at the casings, and delivery for 16 ft stock.
Mistakes that cost money
- Stepping off a fixed 16 in from one corner leaves a 4 in sliver at the other; divide the wall into whole equal bays instead.
- Battens pinned to drywall alone pop within a year; run adhesive on every piece and brad it while the glue grabs.
- MDF battens in a bathroom swell from the bottom up; use PVC or primed poplar within splash range of a tub.
- Keeping a 9/16 in baseboard behind 1/2 in battens leaves a 1/16 in step at every joint that no caulk hides.
- Wainscot thickness pushes outlets behind the finished plane, so plan box extenders where NEC 314.20 requires them.
- Cutting the cap before the battens puts the scarf joints in open bays; run the field first and the cap last.

Frequently asked questions
How tall should wainscoting be?
About one third of the wall height. That is 32 in under an 8 ft ceiling and 36 to 42 in under 9 or 10 ft. A chair rail on its own sits 32 to 36 in up. Going past 48 in in a standard room makes the ceiling feel low.
How do I space board and batten wainscoting evenly?
Subtract one batten width from the wall length in inches, divide by the spacing you want, round to a whole number of bays, then divide the same length by that number. A 14 ft wall at a 16 in target gives 10 bays at 16.55 in on center and 14.05 in of clear drywall in each.
Do I have to remove the baseboard first?
Only if the new field material is thicker than the base. Quarter inch beadboard tucks behind a standard 9/16 in base, but 1/2 in battens sit proud of it and leave a step. Pulling the base and reinstalling it over the panel is the clean fix.
Should I use MDF or wood for wainscoting?
Primed MDF for paint grade in dry rooms, because it is flat, cheap and sprays well. Poplar or PVC anywhere water can reach a cut edge, including bathrooms and mudrooms, because MDF swells from the bottom and splits the paint.
