Worked example

A 2,400 sq ft attic with no vapor retarder falls under the 1/150 rule: 2,400 / 150 = 16 sq ft of net free area, or 16 x 144 = 2,304 sq in. Split 50/50, that is 1,152 sq in of intake at the soffits and 1,152 sq in of exhaust at the ridge.

Intake: 1,152 / 65 = 17.7, so 18 rectangular 16 x 8 in soffit vents, or 1,152 / 9 = 128 ft of continuous strip vent. Exhaust: 1,152 / 18 = 64 ft of ridge vent, or 1,152 / 50 = 23.04, so 24 box vents if the ridge is too short for a ridge vent.

How attic ventilation is sized

The IRC sets the minimum: 1 sq ft of net free area for every 150 sq ft of attic floor, or half that (1/300) when a vapor retarder is on the warm side of the ceiling, as it is in most modern homes with kraft-faced batts or a poly sheet behind the drywall. Divide the attic floor area by the ratio, convert to square inches, and split the total between low intake at the eaves and high exhaust at the ridge.

Balanced or intake-heavy is the goal. If exhaust exceeds intake, the ridge vent pulls conditioned air up through ceiling penetrations instead of outside air through the soffits, which wastes energy and can draw moist house air into the attic. The 1/300 exception in the IRC requires the exhaust share to be between 40 and 50% of the total, with the rest as intake.

Choosing and placing vents

Count vents by their published NFA, not their face size. A typical 16 x 8 in rectangular soffit vent is rated around 65 sq in, a continuous strip vent around 9 sq in per foot, a ridge vent around 18 sq in per foot and a box vent around 50 sq in. Space soffit vents evenly along both eaves and keep insulation off them with baffles so air can reach the underside of the sheathing.

Use one kind of exhaust. Combining a ridge vent with gable vents or box vents short-circuits the airflow: air enters the nearer opening instead of the soffits and the lower attic stays stagnant. Power fans are not a substitute for intake area and can pull conditioned air from the house. Where the ridge is too short for the exhaust needed, add box vents high on the back slope instead of a ridge vent.

Can I use a ridge vent and gable vents together?

It is better not to. The ridge vent draws air from the nearby gable vents instead of the soffits, so the lower attic gets little airflow. Close the gable vents when a ridge and soffit system is installed.
