Dehumidifier Size formula
Area = Length x Width x (Ceiling height / 8, when the ceiling is above 8 ft)
Pints per day = Energy Star guidance value for that area and dampness level (see table), interpolated between rows
Add 5 pints for many occupants, laundry or a shower in the space
Liters per day = Pints per day x 0.473Worked example
A 30 x 40 ft basement (1,200 sq ft) with damp spots on the walls (very damp) that also holds the laundry. The very damp column reads 25 pints at 1,000 sq ft and 30 pints at 1,500 sq ft, so 1,200 sq ft is 25 + (200 / 500) x 5 = 27 pints. Add 5 pints for the laundry: 32 pints per day.
The next retail size up is a 35 pint unit, which removes about 16.6 liters a day. Under the old test method that same machine would have been labeled roughly 32 x 1.4 = 45 pints.

How to pick the right capacity
Dehumidifiers are rated by how many pints of water they can pull from the air in 24 hours at 65 F and 60% relative humidity. Energy Star guidance pairs floor area with four dampness levels: a space that only smells musty in humid weather needs the least, a space with standing water the most. Measure the floor, pick the honest dampness level, and add 5 pints when a laundry, shower or a crowd of people adds moisture.
When the result lands between sizes, go up. A unit running near its limit cycles constantly and never reaches the set point, while a slightly larger unit reaches 50% humidity and rests. Retail sizes are 20, 22, 30, 35, 40 and 50 pints; anything bigger is a whole-house unit ducted into the HVAC system.
Old ratings, placement and drainage
Any chart or review written before mid-2019 uses the old 80 F test, under which the same machines scored about 40% higher. A neighbor's 70 pint unit is what a 50 pint unit is today, and a 50 pint model from that era corresponds to roughly 35 pints now. Compare only ratings measured the same way.
Put the unit where air can circulate on all sides, away from walls and furniture, and in the dampest part of the space. A bucket fills in a few hours at full output, so run a hose to a floor drain or add a condensate pump. Fix the water first where you can: grade soil away from the house, extend downspouts and seal cracks, because a dehumidifier treats the symptom, not the leak.

Why is my 70 pint dehumidifier now called 50 pints?
The DOE test changed in 2019 from 80 F to 65 F, which is closer to a real basement. The cooler air holds less water, so the same machine removes fewer pints in the test. Old 70 pint units are roughly 50 pint units under the new label.
Is a bigger dehumidifier better?
Up to a point. A unit sized one step above the chart reaches the set point faster and runs less often, which is more efficient than a small unit running nonstop. Going far bigger costs more up front and uses more power each cycle without drying the space any better.
How many pints per day for 2,000 sq ft?
