Quick answer: Size a ceiling fan on floor area: a room of 145 to 225 sq ft takes a 44 to 54 in blade span. A 15 by 13 ft room with a 9 ft ceiling is 195 sq ft, so it takes a 44 to 54 in fan on a 6 in downrod.

Worked example

A 20 by 14 ft great room with a 12 ft ceiling is 280 square feet. That is inside the 226 to 400 sq ft bracket, so it takes a 50 to 72 in fan, and 60 in is the stock size most lines carry there. One fan covers it, because 280 is under 400.

The downrod comes from the ceiling: 12 minus 8 is 4 feet above the base height, times 6 inches, gives a 24 in rod. Blade height is 144 - 24 - 6 = 114 inches, or 9 ft 6 in above the floor. The short wall is 14 ft, or 168 inches. A 60 in fan centered leaves (168 - 60) / 2 = 54 inches to each wall, well past the 24 in preferred.

Picking the blade span

Span comes off floor area, not room shape. Up to 75 square feet takes a 29 to 36 inch fan, and 76 to 144 square feet a 36 to 44 inch. From 145 to 225 square feet use 44 to 54 inches, and from 226 to 400 use 50 to 72. Past 400 square feet, or in any room longer than about 25 feet, hang two smaller fans spaced along the length rather than one oversized one. Two 52 inch fans in a 26 by 16 ft great room cover the whole floor; one 72 inch fan in the middle leaves both ends still.

Blade count sells fans but does not move air. What moves air is span, motor torque and blade pitch, which is why ENERGY STAR rates fans in CFM per watt rather than by blades. A 52 inch fan has to reach about 110 CFM per watt to certify. A DC motor fan clears that easily and draws 30 watts on high instead of 75. Check the blade tip clearance before you commit to a span. Keep tips at least 18 inches off the nearest wall, and 24 inches where the room allows. Closer than that and the fan chops wall air and turns noisy.

Downrod length and hanging height

The target is blades 8 to 9 feet above the floor. The stock rod chart gets you there by adding 6 inches of rod for every foot of ceiling above 8 feet. A 9 ft ceiling takes a 6 in rod, 10 ft takes 12 in, 12 ft takes 24 in and 14 ft takes 36 in. Rods come in 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 inch stock lengths. Most fans ship with a 3 to 6 inch rod, so anything taller is a separate order in the matching finish.

At 8 feet the ceiling itself is the constraint. A flush or hugger mount puts the blades roughly 10 inches down, landing near 7 ft 2 in. That clears the 7 foot minimum IRC R305.1 sets for a habitable room, but leaves nothing for a light kit. Sloped ceilings are their own problem. Past about 20 degrees the ball hanger binds and the fan wobbles, so buy the maker's sloped canopy rated for the actual pitch. Wherever the fan lands, the box has to be a listed fan-rated box per NEC 314.27(C), rated to 70 pounds. NEC 422.18 wants the fan carried by that box system or by framing behind it.

What this calculator leaves out

This is a sizing result, not a wiring plan. It does not check the circuit the fan lands on, the wall control, or the extra conductor a separate light switch needs. A remote-only fan still wants a wall box with a switch for the hot. It leaves out the brace bar or blocking if the existing box is not fan rated, and the ceiling patch that follows. Airflow in CFM, sound rating, and whether the fan is reversible for winter are model specs from the manufacturer sheet. Outdoors it does not judge the porch structure, and a fan over a pool has its own clearance rule in NEC 680. Permit and inspection rules for a new fan circuit are set locally.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Hanging the fan on the lighting box already there. NEC 314.27(C) needs a listed fan-rated box, and a pancake box will not hold one.
  • A hugger on a 10 ft ceiling leaves the blades over 9 ft up, where you feel nothing. A 12 in downrod fixes it.
  • A 72 in fan in a 10 ft wide room leaves 24 in per side, and off center a tip nearly touches the wall.
  • An indoor fan on a covered porch. Without a UL damp listing the motor corrodes and the blades warp within two seasons.
  • Ordering before checking the framing. A fan brace bar spans between joists from below through the box hole, but only on an accessible ceiling.
  • Buying blade count instead of span. Airflow follows span and motor, which is why ENERGY STAR rates fans in CFM per watt, not by blades.

Frequently asked questions

What size ceiling fan do I need for a 12x12 room?

A 144 square foot room sits at the top of the 76 to 144 sq ft bracket. A 36 to 44 inch fan fits, and 44 inches is the usual pick. Going to 52 inches puts the blade tips within 22 inches of two walls in a room that size.

How long should the downrod be for a 10 foot ceiling?

12 inches. The stock chart adds 6 inches of rod per foot of ceiling above 8 feet. That lands the blades near 8 ft 6 in, inside the 8 to 9 ft band where a fan moves the most air.

How low can a ceiling fan hang?

Keep the blades at least 7 feet above the floor, which is also the minimum habitable ceiling height in IRC R305.1. On an 8 foot ceiling that means a flush or hugger mount, and a fan with a light kit can push you under it.

Can I use a regular ceiling fan on a covered porch?

No. A porch, a screened room and a bathroom all need a UL damp location listing, and anywhere rain or hose spray reaches needs a wet listing. Indoor fans use unsealed motors and pressed-board blades that swell in humidity.
