A 12 x 45 ft single driveway, 540 sq ft, poured 5 in thick for a heavy pickup. It is stamped, over a 6 in base, with a #3 rebar grid and the old asphalt broken out.
The slab is 540 x (13 + 0.6) = $7,344 up to 540 x (25 + 1.0) = $14,040. The 6 in base is 270 cubic feet, 10 cubic yards, 14 tons, so $448 to $910. The rebar grid is $540 to $1,080 and the asphalt removal $1,350 to $3,240. That totals about $9,700 to $19,300, or $17.93 to $35.69 per square foot. Concrete in place is 225 cubic feet, 8.33 cubic yards, or 9.17 yards ordered with waste, and joints go in 10 to 15 feet apart.

Where the money goes on a driveway
The finished slab is roughly two thirds of the bill and everything under it is the other third. A plain broom finish typically runs $7 to $12 per square foot in 2026 for concrete, forms, placing and finishing. Stamped work doubles that because of the release powder, the mats, the labor to detail every edge, and the color sealer it needs every two or three years. Exposed aggregate and integral color sit in between. The sub-base is 4 inches of crushed stone under IRC R506.2.2, about 7 tons on a 20 by 20 foot pad, at $32 to $65 per ton delivered and compacted.
Removal is the line that moves most between bids. Stripping 6 inches of soil and hauling it is $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot. Breaking out an old concrete driveway is $2.50 to $6, because it is loaded by weight and trucked to a recycler. Ask whether the bid includes the base, the steel, the saw cutting and the haul-off. A $7 per square foot quote and an $11 quote are often the same job with different lines left out.
Access, the pump, and the joints
Walk the pour route before you sign anything. A mixer chute reaches about 16 feet from the back of the truck, so a straight drive off the street places itself. If the truck cannot back in, the crew brings a line pump, typically $600 to $1,000 with a half day minimum in 2026. The same applies where the route crosses a septic field, a city sidewalk or a lawn you want to keep. Ask about that up front rather than see it as a change order.
Joints are the cheapest part of the job and the one most often botched. Control joints go in at 24 to 36 times the slab thickness, so 8 to 12 feet apart in a 4 inch driveway. Cut them a quarter of the slab depth with a soft-cut saw, 6 to 18 hours after placing. Isolation joints with a compressible filler go anywhere the slab meets the garage, the apron, a step or a foundation wall, because those elements move on their own. In freeze-thaw country order 3,500 psi air-entrained mix under IRC Table R402.2 and keep de-icing salt off the first winter.
What this calculator leaves out
The apron and curb cut in the public right of way, which the road authority permits separately and often requires a bonded contractor to build. Also excluded: a line pump where the truck cannot reach, saw cutting if the bid prices it apart, a sealer, and any trench drain or culvert the grade needs. It leaves out retaining or step work where the drive cuts into a slope, moving a gas meter or water shutoff, and replacing sod along the edges. Delivery surcharges and short-load fees on small pours sit outside it as well.

Mistakes that cost money
- Saw cutting the morning after instead of within 6 to 18 hours: the slab picks its own crack line first and the joints do nothing.
- Wire mesh laid flat on the base and never pulled up: tires push it to the bottom, where it holds nothing together.
- No isolation joint where the new slab meets the garage floor or the apron; the driveway grows in July and shoves whatever it touches.
- Backing a mixer over the city sidewalk or a septic lid to reach the back: the cracked sidewalk panel gets billed back to the owner.
- Sealing a fresh driveway inside 30 days traps bleed water and blushes the surface; wait a month, then use a breathable siloxane.
- The apron and curb cut sit in the public right of way, so they carry their own permit and often need a bonded contractor.
