Worked example

A 16 x 13 ft family room with a 12 sq ft closet: 208 + 12 = 220 sq ft. Add 10% waste for 242 sq ft. With 6 x 36 in planks, each plank is 6 x 36 / 144 = 1.5 sq ft, so 242 / 1.5 = 161.3, or 162 planks.

At 8 planks per box that is 162 / 8 = 20.25, so buy 21 boxes, which is 168 planks or 252 sq ft. At $45 per box the flooring costs $945.

How to calculate vinyl plank flooring

Measure the room length and width in feet and multiply for square footage, then add closets and hallways. Add 10 percent waste for a straight layout and 15 percent for diagonal or herringbone patterns. Divide by the area of one plank to get a plank count, then by the planks per box, rounding up each time.

Box coverage is printed on the label and ranges from about 20 to 30 square feet, so two products with the same plank size can pack differently. Buy every box from the same lot number and keep a few spare planks for repairs, since colors and embossing change between production runs.

Choosing and installing vinyl plank

Look at the wear layer, not just the total thickness: 12 mil handles most homes, 20 mil or more stands up to dogs, kids and entryways. Rigid core planks (SPC or WPC) hide small subfloor flaws better than flexible glue-down vinyl, but the subfloor should still be flat to within 3/16 inch over 10 feet.

Click-lock planks float, so leave a 1/4 inch gap at all walls and fixed objects and cover it with quarter round. Many products include an attached pad; if not, use only the underlayment the manufacturer approves, since a pad that is too soft lets joints flex and separate.
