A couple with 1.28 gpf WaterSense toilets, a 1.8 gpm head and 10 minute showers: showers are 2 x 10 x 1.8 = 36 gallons a day, toilets 2 x 5 x 1.28 = 12.8, laundry 3 loads a week at 20 gallons is 8.6 a day, and the dishwasher twice a week is 1.1.
Faucets and leaks add about 36 for two people, so indoor use is about 95 gallons a day, or 47 per person. That is well under the EPA figure of about 82 gallons per person, and it comes almost entirely from the fixtures rather than from shorter showers.

Where household water actually goes
Indoor use is dominated by two fixtures. EPA's breakdown puts toilets near 24 percent of indoor use and showers near 20, with faucets close behind at 19 and clothes washers at 17. Leaks account for about 12 percent, which is the share most people do not know they are paying for. Dishwashers, the appliance homeowners most often blame, are under 2 percent.
That order decides where a saving is worth making. Replacing a pre-1994 toilet at 3.5 gallons a flush with a 1.28 gallon WaterSense model saves a family of four roughly 16,000 gallons a year on its own. Shortening every shower by two minutes saves about 5,800. The fixture beats the habit.
Reading the bill and finding leaks
Most US utilities bill in CCF, hundred cubic feet, where 1 CCF is 748 gallons. Combined water and sewer typically runs $4 to $12 per 1,000 gallons in 2026 depending on the utility, and sewer is often charged on winter water use so that summer irrigation does not inflate it.
To find a leak, turn off every fixture and watch the meter's low flow indicator for 15 minutes. Any movement means water is going somewhere. The usual culprit is a toilet flapper: put a few drops of food coloring in the tank, wait 10 minutes without flushing, and look for color in the bowl. A flapper costs a few dollars and can be the difference of 200 gallons a day.
What this calculator leaves out
Hot water energy cost, which is a separate and often larger bill than the water itself, and any water softener regeneration, humidifier, evaporative cooler, pool top-up or car washing. It does not model seasonal irrigation schedules, rainfall, soil type or a well system where the water is free but the pumping is not. Sewer charges based on winter averaging and tiered rate structures also sit outside it.
Mistakes that cost money
- Chasing shorter showers while a 3.5 gpf toilet stays: the toilet is usually the bigger number in a pre-1994 house.
- A silently running toilet flapper wastes up to 200 gallons a day and shows up only as a bill that jumped for no reason.
- Reading the bill in CCF and treating it as gallons; 1 CCF is 748 gallons, so the numbers are off by a factor of 748.
- Watering daily for 10 minutes instead of deeply twice a week; shallow water evaporates and trains roots to stay at the surface.
- Replacing a 1.6 gpf toilet with a 1.28 to save water, when the same money on a leak repair saves several times more.
- Ignoring the irrigation line when the meter turns with everything off; an underground break can run for months.
