Trees per row = (Length - in-row spacing) / in-row spacing + 1
Rows = (Width - row spacing) / row spacing + 1
Trees = Rows x Trees per row  (offset rows hold one fewer in every other row)
Trees per acre = 43,560 / (in-row spacing x row spacing)

Worked example

A three-row windbreak along a 300 ft field edge, evergreens 8 ft apart in the row and rows 16 ft apart, offset: trees per row = (300 - 8) / 8 + 1 = 37, and the offset rows hold 37 + 36 + 37 = 110 trees. The planting takes a strip 48 ft wide.

The density check runs the other way: 43,560 / (8 x 16) = 340 trees per acre, and the 300 x 48 ft strip is 0.33 acres, so 110 trees is right on the mark. Order 10 percent extra as replacements, since first-year losses on bare-root conservation stock run 10 to 20 percent.

Spacing is set by the mature crown, not the seedling

Look up the crown width the species reaches at 20 years and again at maturity, then space to that number. A block that looks absurdly empty the first five years is correctly spaced; a block that looks full in year three is a thinning job in year twelve. NRCS ties initial density to average height at 20 years for exactly this reason, and its table runs from 5 x 5 ft for Christmas trees through 8 x 8 ft for sawlogs to 20 ft and wider for open-grown trees.

Distance from what you own matters as much as distance between trees. Keep large shade trees 20 ft or more from the house, 10 ft off walks and drives where roots lift concrete, and completely off a septic drain field. Nothing that matures over about 25 ft belongs under a primary utility line, because the line crew will top it into a Y. Call 811 before the auger comes out: the locate is free, takes 2 to 3 business days, and the cost of a struck gas or fiber line lands on whoever dug without it.

Screens, windbreaks and orchard blocks

A privacy screen is one row, planted tight enough that the crowns knit: 6 to 10 ft apart for arborvitae, holly and upright junipers, more for spruce. Offsetting a second row by half a spacing screens far better than one row squeezed to 4 ft, which just builds a wall of dead lower branches. A farmstead windbreak is 2 to 3 rows, 12 to 20 ft between rows so a mower can control weeds, with 6 to 8 ft in the row for dense evergreens; NRCS caps between-row spacing at 20 ft. Height does the work, so a windbreak protects 10 to 30 times its mature height downwind.

Orchard spacing follows the rootstock, not the fruit. Dwarf apple goes 6 to 8 ft apart, semi-dwarf about 15 ft, standard about 25 ft, and pears and non-dwarf sweet cherries take another 5 ft. Between rows, leave whatever the widest machine needs plus 2 ft: a compact tractor and mower want 12 ft, a sprayer or orchard lift more. Trees planted in the fall or very early spring while dormant establish with far less water than summer plantings, and bare-root conservation stock loses 10 to 20 percent in the first year, so order replacements with the original bundle.

What this calculator leaves out

Site prep and weed control, which decide survival more than spacing does: a killed sod strip or fabric squares for the first three years. Also tree tubes or trunk guards where deer and rabbits browse, staking only where wind demands it, 2 to 3 in of mulch held 6 in off the trunk, and water at about 10 gallons per inch of trunk caliper each week through the first two summers. Delivery, the permit some towns require for street trees, and any thinning already planned into a timber block.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Digging holes or trenching a row without calling 811 first: the locate is free and takes 2 to 3 business days, and a struck gas or fiber line is billed to the digger.
  • Planting a large shade tree 10 ft from the house: keep big canopies 20 ft or more off the foundation and 10 ft off walks, drives and the septic tank.
  • Trees over a leach field: roots follow the wet lines and plug them, so keep the field clear and stay back at least one mature crown width.
  • A row planted under a primary utility line gets topped into a Y; nothing taller than about 25 ft at maturity belongs in that corridor.
  • Spacing measured off the nursery pot: a maple with a 40 ft mature crown on 15 ft centers becomes a thinning job, not an allee.
  • Planting the screen on the property line: in most states branches and roots crossing the line are the neighbor's to cut, so set the row back half the mature crown.
